I've been looking for a while for a paintball gun to use with pepperballs for self defence, something that my wife can also manage, but that I don't require a licence for.

What are the options, brands etc that are reputable? And shops where one can look for these, in Cape Town preferably?

Hi Buzz
I would highly recommend that you consider purchasing the Tiberius SA-8 for the purpose of self-defence. This pistol was specifically designed as a less lethal weapon for military and law enforcement purposes. It is similar to the recreational model, the Tiberius 8 but with orange top part. Have a look at the Tiberius 8 on the website www.tiberiusarms.com Note that the SA-8 IS listed under the Less Lethal section and you wont have access to that part of the site. This is a bulky weapon not suitable to carry but in my opinion perfect for home defence
I must warn you that this is not a toy and that you will inflict serious injury at short range, you might even kill somebody if shot in the face. At least you will be able to argue in court that it was not your intent. I treat mine as a firearm and it is placed in the safe if I am not at home, please consider how you would be storing this weapon before purchasing as there is always the possibility of this thing being turned against you
I purchased mine from the Paintball Shop in Centurion (012) 653 4650, give them a call, sure they could courier it down for you or put you in contact with a supplier in your area

Thanks Louis, I'll have a look around for it.

What should one look out for in a paintball pistol, i.e. what should it have, and what should it NOT have?

Buzz

Consider the following when looking for a pepper ball pistol:
Purchase a product designed for your specific requirements. Don't try to adapt a recreational gun (Paintball gun) for self-defence
Don't go for something that looks like the real thing, this only has the potential of getting you in trouble
You need a min velocity of 350f/s to break a pepper ball.
Avoid any unnecessary and bulky attachments, keep it simple.
Consider a weapon that works with magazines, so that you can load the one magazine with pepper balls and the other with solid balls. Note below

Finally just a few additional things to consider:
Always consider your own safety
Remember that the effectiveness of this weapon depends on the size of your attacker.
There is no guarantee that this weapon will stop an attacker
It isn’t always advisable to fire pepper balls inside your house
Although you don’t need a licence for these weapons view it as a firearm and handle accordingly

Thanks Louis, that's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.
